Salt Water Rinse

One of the most effective home treatments for any type of dental problem is warm salt water. It’s a natural disinfectant, and it also helps soothe the area and wash away harmful bacteria. Simply mix one-half teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of warm water, then swish for approximately 30 seconds.

Cold Compress

Applying ice packs or cold compresses to the affected area helps shrink blood vessels. As a result, pain is reduced. This method also helps decrease swelling and inflammation. When applying a cold compress, leave it on the external jaw for approximately 20 minutes, then remove it. Repeat this process several times every day.

Peppermint Tea Bags

Tea contains tannic acid, which shrinks blood vessels and reduces inflammation. Our Denver dentist recommends using peppermint tea as an added layer of relief. This helps numb discomfort and soothe the tissues. To do this, place a warm, moistened tea bag over the problematic area for about 20 minutes.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibacterial, and it has been used for centuries for its unique medicinal properties. In addition to fighting bacteria, garlic is also a pain reliever. Try creating a paste out of crushed garlic and applying it to the affected tooth.

Clove Oil

Clove oil naturally reduces inflammation and numbs pain. Cloves also contain eugenol, an antiseptic. To apply clove oil, you can put some on a cotton ball and dab it over the area. Alternatively, you can add the clove oil to water and swish.

Wheatgrass

One of the most nutritious supplements is wheatgrass juice. It contains chlorophyll, which helps fight bacteria and reduce inflammation. Wheatgrass boasts a number of healing properties, and can heal your body from the inside out.

Vanilla Extract

Packed with antioxidants, vanilla extract promotes healing. It also contains alcohol, which helps numb pain. You can apply vanilla extract by dabbing it onto the tooth and gums with your finger or a cotton ball.

What toothache treatment will my dentist recommend?

At our Denver practice, your recommended treatment will depend on the cause of your toothache. If decay is the culprit, you may need a filling or a dental crown. If the damage has breached the pulp of the tooth, then your doctor may recommend root canal therapy.

Sometimes gum disease can cause a toothache. In these cases, periodontal treatments can be performed to eliminate infection and promote healing.

There are also times when removing a tooth is necessary to preserve overall oral health. This is only recommended as a last resort, when all other treatment options have been considered.
